Wednesday, February 22 2017, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Join the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center as we view the documentary “Brother Outsider” in recognition of Black History month. “Brother Outsider” has introduced millions of viewers around the world to the life and work of Bayard Rustin — a visionary strategist and activist who has been called “the unknown hero” of the civil rights movement. A disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom- the nation’s highest civilian honor- by President Barack Obama on November 20, 2013” (rustin.org). After the viewing, there will be an opportunity for dialogue about Bayard Rustin’s life and it’s impact on the civil rights movement. If you have any questions, please contact our office via email at GSRC@niu.edu or call 815-753-4772 and our staff will assist you.
